A fish hatchery technician applies knowledge of management and fish culturing techniques to produce fish for stocking into public waters across the state. The specialized equipment and modern facilities available at the hatchery allows the Department of Environmental Conservation to produce large numbers of healthy fish. Fish are stocked for several reasons. Some are stocked to enhance recreational fishing, others to restore native species to waters they formerly occupied.
Education
These jobs require a minimum of 2 years of college which must include Biology and/or Zoology, Ichthyology, biology of fishes, fisheries management, limnology, aquatic ecology or equivalent.
Salary
Approximately $25,000 per year.
Skill Requirements
Interpersonal and public presentation skills are becoming important to these jobs but much of the work is still spent out-of-doors working independently.
